If you want to know how cannabis works, you need to understand a little about the endocannabinoid system. A fairly recent scientific discovery, the endocannabinoid or ECS system is basically a cell-signaling network located throughout the body. It’s made up of receptors that send communications to the brain and are responsible for balance and homeostasis.

How Cannabis Works

There are two main receptors that endocannabinoids bind to, working to let the ECS know when it needs to take action. CB1 receptors are concentrated in the central nervous system. CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral nervous system, especially immune cells. The human body produces endocannabinoids as needed to help keep internal functions running properly. The ECS directly influences mood, pain, motor skills, metabolism, liver function, immune function, memory, fertility, appetite, sleep, reproduction, pleasure and a whole lot more.

Similar to endocannabinoids produced by the human body, cannabinoids are found in the cannabis plant. The most well-known and abundant cannabinoid is Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. It’s not only the compound that causes the “high” associated with cannabis but also binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors, resulting in a range of therapeutic effects.

The second most common cannabinoid is cannabidiol or CBD. It doesn’t cause any psycho-active effects and doesn’t bind to CB1 or CB2 receptors. While more research is needed, it is believed that CBD might prevent endocannabinoids from being broken down. While there are benefits to both THC and CBD separately, the entourage effect of both compounds working together can achieve even greater rewards.

What are the effects of cannabis?

The effects of cannabis are a very personalized experience and impacted by many factors, including your metabolism, preferences and tolerance. THC and CBD percentages, terpenes and consumption methods also play a role. Inhaling the smoke from flower delivers a very quick onset of effects while edibles take a while to settle in. Concentrates tend to be more potent while topicals avoid psychoactive effects.
